Brick Event 2: a small history

Brick Event 2 is a LEGO convention not run by BeLUG itself, but it is organised by a couple of our members.  So I approached the team behind it at the past Brick Mania Liège and asked if they would be intrested to share some more background information about how it came to be.

We leerden elkaar kennen doordat onze zonen (Brent en Nils) in dezelfde klas zitten en we kwamen er  achter dat we een gezamenlijke interesse, Lego®, deelden. We trokken met zijn allen (Andy, Griet, Brent, Febe en Wouter, Melissa, Lara, Nils) naar Brick-Mania Antwerpen en daarna volgenden nog enkele andere beurzen. We grapten er al eens over om in onze eigen buurt een eigen Lego® event te organiseren. Nog voor we het eigenlijk zelf goed beseften hadden we al met heel wat BeLUG leden gebabbeld en was het pas later dat we ons realiseerden dat we eigenlijk al met de organisatie bezig waren.

We got to know each other through our sons (Brent and Nils) who where together in the same grade, and found out we shared a mutual intrest, Lego.  We all went together (Andy, Griet, Brent, Febe and Wouter, Melissa, Lara, Nils) to Brick Mania Antwerp and afterwards some more conventions.  We joked about it to organise a Lego convention in our own area.  But before we even realised it, we had been chatting with a lot of BeLUG members and it was only later that we realised that we were actually starting with the organisation already.

We legden contacten met Buurtwerk Doornzele, waar we kunnen rekenen op een heel team dat ons helpt bij de zaal en de uitbating van de cafetaria. Ook van Eric en Steven kregen we heel wat advies en steun. En uiteraard werden onze families aangespoord om een steentje bij te dragen, wat ze met veel plezier deden.

We came into contact with Buurtwerk Doornzele, and thanks to them we can count on a whole team that helps with the exploitation of the venue and the bar.  We also received a lot of support and advacie from Steven and Eric.  And of course our families where enlisted with adding their weight, something they did with pleasure.

Vorig jaar hadden we dus onze eerste editie. Wat was dat spannend! Na elk terloops gesprek, elke chat en elke brainstorm sessie kreeg alles meer en meer vorm. Maar… gaan we wel bezoekers hebben? … Wat gaan de reacties zijn? … Gaat alles goed verlopen? … Wat kunnen we nog allemaal over het hoofd gezien hebben? …

So last year we had our first edition.  That was one tense moment!  After each little talk, every chat and every brainstorming session everything began to come together some more.  But... are we going to get visitors? ... What will be the reactions?...  Will everything run smoothly?  What might we have missed? ...

Toen we een bericht plaatsten op het forum van BeLUG begonnen de enthousiaste inschrijvingen binnen te komen. Voor de eerste editie konden we rekenen op maar liefst 17 deelnemers die hun werken met fierheid kwamen tentoonstellen. En… Het werd een énorm succes ! Nooit hadden we durven dromen om 1823 bezoekers, te mogen verwelkomen! Zeker niet slecht voor een eerste editie! De reacties van de bezoekers waren heel tof: ‘Verrassend wat je allemaal kan doen met wat blokjes’, ‘Echte kunstwerken’, …

When we placed a message on the forum of BeLUG, excited registrations began to come.  For the first edition we could count on no less than 17 participants we proudly came to present their creations.  And... it became a big success!  Nowhere in our wildest dreams had we thought we would welcome 1823 visitors!  Definitly not bad for a first edition!  The reactions where really nice: "Amazing what you could do with bricks", "Real works of art",...

Ook de deelnemers waren heel enthousiast over Brick Event want al snel kwam de vraag om een tweede editie te organiseren. De voorkeur ging uit naar hetzelfde weekend, zij het een jaartje later. De zaal was op zaterdag 8 en zondag 9 oktober 2016 nog vrij en dus legden we dat al maar vast… En zo konden de voorbereidingen voor een 2^de editie beginnen!

The participants were also very enthousiastic about Brick Event and soon the question came if a second edition will take place.  The preference went to the same weekend, albeit a year later.  The venue was available on saturday the 8th and sunday the 9th of october 2016 so we booked her... and the preparations for a second edition began!

Brick Events 2 takes place the weekend of the 8th and the 9th of october, in the venue of Ter Gulden Celle, Evergem (nearby Ghent).
